Setting Up Medications for Digital Prescriptions

Writing a prescription should take seconds, not minutes. The Medications registry in Veetz is your practice's medication library: register each medication once — active ingredient, laboratory, classification, standard instructions — and it becomes instantly available every time you prescribe. Veetz even calculates the dose per application based on the patient's weight.

  1. On the left-hand sidebar, click Veterinary.
  2. Click Clinical Setup.
  3. Click Prescription Setup, then Medications.

Exploring Your Medication Library

The list shows each medication's Active Ingredient (with its indication right below), Laboratory, Medication Type, whether it is Controlled, and its standard Instructions. From the action bar you can:

  • Search by active ingredient, with suggestions as you type.
  • Add a new medication.
  • Export the list to Excel.
  • Print the list.

Click on any row to open the medication's full details.

Registering a Medication

Click Add and fill in the two sections of the form:

Medication

  • Active Ingredient (required): The substance itself — for example, "Amoxicillin". Registering by active ingredient keeps your library organized even when commercial brands change.
  • Manufacturing Laboratory: The company that produces it.
  • Medication Type (required): Choose Veterinary or Human. New medications start as Veterinary by default.
  • Controlled Medication: Turn this switch on for substances under special control. The medication is highlighted with a warning badge in your library, keeping the whole team aware.
  • Instructions (required): The standard usage guidance, up to 200 characters — for example, "Administer with food. Complete the full course."

Clinical Reference

  • Indication: What this medication treats — it appears alongside the name in your library, making selection faster.
  • Package Insert Text: A longer reference text with everything your team may need to consult — contraindications, interactions, precautions.

Click Save when you are done. To remove a medication, open it and click Delete.

From Library to Prescription

When you create a prescription in a patient's record, your medication library does the heavy lifting — see the full flow in Issuing Digital Prescriptions. For each medication you prescribe, you inform:

  • Medication: Pick it from your library — or register a new one on the spot without leaving the prescription.
  • Dosage Per Weight Unit and Dosage Unit (mg, mL, or your own unit).
  • Interval and Frequency Type — for example, every 8 hours.
  • End Date (required) and Total Doses.
  • Instructions (required): Clear guidance for the pet owner — for example, "1 pill every 4 hours".

Automatic Dose Calculation

Here is the time-saver veterinarians love: based on the dosage per weight unit you set and the patient's weight, Veetz automatically calculates the total dose per application. Less mental math, fewer errors, safer prescriptions.

Controlled medications deserve extra care

Always flag controlled substances using the Controlled Medication switch. The visual badge in your library helps the team apply the correct dispensing and record-keeping procedures.

Medication library vs. product catalog

The medication library powers your prescriptions. If you also sell or stock these items, register them in your product catalog to control prices, stock, and expiration dates.
